OUR PROCESS:

Creation of this documentary required us to first research and understand Fresh Roots’s mission. We then filmed various Fresh Roots community events and interviewed Marc Schutzbank, the executive director of Fresh Roots. We filmed for coverage since we had a limited amount of events we could use since Fresh Roots is mostly winding down near Fall. The last thing we did was piece together the documentary using Marc’s interview as a guide.

Before and After
MY MISSION:

I was very gland to work with my team as they are all very professional and organized peers. Their devotion for this documentary had encouraged my creativity to flow. I had consistently provided some new ideas to improve the overall look of the film during the production stage, which had gained a better result in the final film. For example, suggestions that I had proposed to make in the previous storyboard (detail attached below). Although my prior job this time was to focus on shooting B-rolls at the two events that Fresh Roots held respectively on October and December, I was responsible for doing colour correction for the raw footages as well.

We went to our very first event that was held by Fresh Roots on Oct 29th, and it was also our first attempt to shoot some B-rolls for this documentary. Although the weather made it not a pleasant day to film, we still managed to get some nice footages. I was personally grateful for this rainy shooting experience as it had taught me how to use filming equipments for the special situation like this. It will be definitely a very useful knowledge to have for my future film making.

Apple Cider Press Event

We finally got a chance to interview our main character, Marc Schutzbank, for the second attempt in Apple Cider Press event on Nov 8th. With the assist of the sunny day, we had quickly filmed as many footage alternatives as we wanted at this event. It was also our last opportunity to get B-rolls, so we did not want to miss it. Especially after my team has done reviewing all footages which we shot in the Fall Harvest Festival, we were not satisfied with what we had. Those footages were just not that ideal for what we attempted to use, so we truly appreciated what the nice weather had provided to us for the second event.
Step 3: I decreased the temperature parameter from 0 to -35.0 (under Lumetric Color effect) to achieve the matching cool bluish tone of the overall documentary.
The raw footage had that warm browny vintage colour tone which we do not want to have.

Step1: I quickly applied Fast Color Corrector to increase the saturation parameter to bring more green and blue back (diminish the vintage feeling).
Step 2: I adjusted the Brightness & Contrast effect (simply turned up the brightness and contrast but kept contrast lower than brightness to provide the washout feeling).
FINAL SHOW/ HUBBUB:

I was so proud that our documentary made it to Hubbub and Final Show Night at Roundhouse Community Center!!! Good work and well applause to my team, and special thanks to our instructor, Susan Clements-Vivian and TA, Mark Nazemi!!!

Draft Storyboard and Treatment

The initial idea for our storyboard was to incorporate animated characters as a framing device to show different aspects of Fresh Roots’s activities, including farming, cooking sessions, and festivals. The audience would follow the animated characters as they initiate a transition in a cooking session at the Norquay Food Hub where people are gathering, talking about Fresh Roots, and enjoying cooking together. This would transition into where the initial ingredients come from by showing people at work in local farms hosted by Fresh Roots and their partners.

Revised Storyboard and Treatment
The second storyboard was heavily distanced from the first one, omitting animated characters in favour of following naturally grown food starting from a home garden, to a kitchen being prepared, and to a festival where the food will be shared and enjoyed.
